What they needed

The municipality was already running the buses. What was missing wasn't the buses — it was people being able to find and trust them without a separate app.

01

Found where people look

The buses should appear in Google Maps, which riders already use — with no new app to download.

02

Information that matches reality

Stops, routes and times should be accurate, so a rider trusts the app and waits for the bus instead of walking off.

03

A system the city owns

The data produced should belong to the city, not be locked to a single provider.

04

Room to grow

Timetables today; live vehicle positions and other city systems should build on the same foundation tomorrow.

What we did

From the paper timetable to a live route in Google Maps, we ran the work in four steps.

  1. 01

    Mapped the network

We surveyed the HAT2, HAT4 and HAT5 lines, their stops and schedules, and got them into a clean, structured shape.

  2. 02

    Built the feed

We produced a standards-compliant GTFS feed and validated it end to end before publishing.

  3. 03

    Published to Google

We registered the feed with Google Transit, and the lines began appearing in Google Maps directions.

  4. 04

    Keep it live

As routes change we update the feed, and we keep the path to real-time data open.

The outcome

Today, when a rider opens Maps and types a destination, they see Famagusta's buses with door-to-door directions. And the municipality holds a maintainable, owned data pipeline — and a foundation that can grow toward real-time and other systems.

  • Residents and visitors find the buses with no separate app.
  • Stops, walking segments and times come together in one set of directions.
  • The municipality can update the feed itself.
